High Tensile Structures

What is a high tensile structure ??

High tensile membrane structures have been engineered & built for about 30 years.

The concept involves the use of  a high strength water resistant fabric membrane (often engineered to form aerodynamic curved shapes) . This engineered fabric is fitted to a purpose built framework ( usually steel) and mechanically tensioned so that the fabric becomes High Tensile.  For stability the framework is connected to large purpose designed & built concrete foundation pads/anchors.

The benefits of such a  structure are many and include:

Fabric can achieve  greater spans than conventional building materials, with minimal supporting structure.

Fabrics are generally  translucent and may be formed into dynamic, organic shapes which bring the feeling of outside inside, whilst providing shade and protection from the weather. Heavier fabrics & 3 dimensional forms will withstand extreme wind & snow conditions

Tensile structures generate live loads and modern architectural fabrics are UV stable materials which provide longevity often beyond 20 years. Most fabrics can be recycled.

There are economies when comparing the costs of  a high tensile building with traditional construction . The most significan cost saving is  the reduction of installation time as the support structure & membrane are pre-fabricated and assembled on site.

Fabric structures have a higher strength /weight ratio than concrete or steel

Sherlock and Watson  specialise in  small scale  structures  from  20 to  500  square meters. We can either supply & install

pre-designed structures of various shapes & sizes (often modular units) or bespoke structures  using  an experienced High Tensile membrane design team using top quality membrane & framework manufacturers.
